A strong correlation exists between the level of silver in pyrite and its catalytic effectiveness. Pre treating pyrite in dilute silver solution enhances its catalytic effectiveness. After pre treatment, any pyrite sample can be made a suitable catalyst for the Galvanox TM process.
Abstract The rate of chalcopyrite leaching in ferric sulfate media during the Galvanox process increases significantly in the presence of silver enhanced pyrite. The increase in the kinetics of leaching is attributed to the galvanic interaction between pyrite and chalcopyrite. Pyrite provides an additional surface area for the cathodic reaction.
